Joe Ochoa ... circumventing the Open Meetings Act

As stated in David Diaz's "Edinburg 'advisory committee' reccommends city tax incentives for buyers of new homes," "Future buyers of new homes in Edinburg might qualify for a break from city property taxes under a plan being promoted by an informal advisory group organized by Mayor Joe Ochoa."

"Proponents of the plan, dubbed the Homebuyers Tax Abatement Incentive, who are part of a group calling itself the "Mayor's Advisory Committee," said the tax break, which would be temporary, would only apply to the value of the home, and not to the value of the lot.

For a newly-constructed home valued at $100,000, Rodríguez illustrated, the city would not collect any city property tax on that structure in the first year, then collect 20 percent the following year, 40 percent in the third year, 60 percent the fourth year, and 80 percent of the fifth year.

Ochoa said he had shared similar sentiments with the group, but emphasized that the advisory council is one way for Edinburg residents to bring their concerns and ideas directly to the city council."

Now, why did Joe-Joe the Clown share similar sentiments ... he runs the meeting.

Why is this a bad idea? First, this advisory group is not sanctioned by the Edinburg City Council and you cannot enter the group with out Joe's approval. Click here to see a proper advisory council. How is this dangerous? Remember Joe's greatest accomplishment, Super Splash? Well, he says it was not his fault. How is it not his fault? He says he was just giving the citizens what they wanted. Who were those citizens ... we don't know, there are no records of the Mayor's Advisory Committee back then either.

Second, the middle classs is already being dumped on by Joe's tax freeze. Now, he wants tax breaks/incentives for new home buyers. Who is going to pay for the police and fire protection, sanitation, roads and other municipal tax burdens? Not the tax freeze recipients! The present citizens and voters of Edinburg. But guess who is going to be exempt? Joe Ochoa will be building his new house pretty soon and Hector Casas owns Shea Construction. Another Joe-idian, Robert Pena Jr., owns DevCon Properties. Rats! They want to get rich with our money!

So what does that mean to you and me? You got it, more taxes.

Thanks Joe, I always wanted to be over taxed.

*** Note to Joe ***

Over 100,000 hits and going strong! :)

I like reading these blogs and I prefer Earn my vote's blog over E-News because it gives me an opportunity to express my opinion when I feel like it. I don't understand what the big deal is on who operates which blog? Patty, Sonny, David, Jason, Joe, Robert. Maybe I missed somthing, I don't understand what difference it makes on who "Earn my vote" is? I have learned this so far, this is the Joe Ochoa hater and his friends blog site and the E-News is the Palacios supporter hater site. Politics. Gotta love it! Keep up the great work!

Congrats on 100k hits! Earn is the man!

David are you going to deny it.

Earn gives background and points out the other side of what Joe and his followers say. E-News makes personal attacks. The biggest difference is that Earn allows comments for and against his or her points and even allows personal attacks against him or her. I would like to see E-news open their comments. They won't they are cowards.

As for the blog about more taxes from Joe's advisory group, who in the hell does this guy think he is? God? This man was bad for Edinburg the first time and is bad for Edinburg now.

The reason he gets reelected is because of his "advisory council." He figured out a way to keep his meeting secret in order to make money for himself and his friends.

Can anyone tell me who is on the mayor's advisory council? Earn can you get that information? I bet they are all rats.

Joe is doing great for the community. The RAT here is Gene Espinoza and the sub contracts he gets for Rio Grande Steel. He got a contract for he new city hall. Now the polics dept.

Why don't you get into that Earn? Or you won't cause he's on your side. As for the comments. People don't even log on here anymore to read what Earn puts on. People just want to see all the gossip going on in the comment section. Take that away from Earn and you wont have anymore readers.

You say you have over 100,000 hits well apparently these people don't vote. You have lost the last 4 elections.

I must ask, earn...If Joe were not mayor what would u write about? :-)

Diaz' loss of employment!

Joe Ochoa is the bigger rat. Why doesn't anybody inquire into the "value engineering" that Enriquez is doing on City Hall construction. He left $400,000 plus worth of limestone off of his bid. Then he went to Joe to bail him out. Joe ordered the idiot interim City Manager to work with Mr. Enriquez to find a cheaper solution or else Mr. Enriquez would have to eat that money. According to Enriquez he could save the city money. How's that saving the city money when that was never included in the bid. All of this has been done behind closed doors either at city hall or the monthly update meetings.

Maybe that is why David doen't answer. He is to busy looking into this mess or helping O.J. find his wifes killer. I guess his not answering IS the best answer. It sure makes things perfectly clear. Now where is the money coming from to pay for his hit jobs THAT is the question. A good guess, E.S. and a few other rats!

I hate to be the one that breaks it to E-News, but Gene is running! He never has had the Palacio money or the Palci family working his politics. They may vote for him, but thats up to them.

Anyone interested in why a construction company would want to own a residential construction company, a bank, and a title company? Why to refer the build to the bank, then bank refer to the title company of course. Problem is the referal of the bank to the title company is a federal offense if I'm not mistaken.

Anyone interested in following up on this?

it is under the real estate settlement procedures act

12 united states code section 2607 - (a) Business referrals

No person shall give and no person shall accept any fee, kickback,
or thing of value pursuant to any agreement or understanding, oral or
otherwise, that business incident to or a part of a real estate
settlement service involving a federally related mortgage loan shall be
referred to any person.

Ask Jaime Rodriguez about that one. Doesn't he develop subdivisions, and then he started a mortgage company and now he has a bank.

To associate Jesus with politics is the most blasphemous statement ever! Especially the valley’s corrupt excuse for politics! Shame on you 4:53 PM!

Is there any benefit to the City for this kind of Tax break? I assume the group must have put forth some reason that it was a good idea for the community in general.
