Finanacial troubles for Robert Pena Jr.
Yes, the big scandal of the day was the towing of Robert Pena Jr.'s truck while at the ECISD Administration building. Robert Pena Jr. and his Edinburg News site have stated that it was "just mechanical problems," therefore they had to hire a tow-truck to take it to a garage.
Funny thing is the tow-truck was from an Auto Recovery company from Harlingen, Texas. Why did Robert Pena Jr. need to call a tow-truck out of Harlingen? Answer: Maybe all the ones in Edinburg and McAllen were busy. Or maybe it was reposession.
But if you doubt that Robert Pena Jr. is financially stable, then chew on this.
In Cause # CL-06-3490-B, Carlos Mir vs. Robert Pena Jr., Individually and DBA Development Consultants and Devcon Properties Ltd. Here's the summary:
Carlos Mir alleges that Robert Pena Jr. and Carlos Mir became partners in Development Consultants in which Carlos Mir invested fifty six thousand dollars in lots that were purchased with all or part of Carlos Mir’s money.
Homes were to be built on the lots and it was further agreed between Carlos Mir and Robert Pena Jr., that from the sales proceeds, Carlos Mir would receive not only an accounting, but also all of Carlos Mir’s money back and one-half of the net profits of the construction projects.
Robert Pena Jr. paid Carlos Mir back only ten thousand dollars. Robert Pena Jr. continues to buy lots, construct homes on the lots, and is selling the lots with the homes. Robert Pena Jr. also call his business Devcon Properties Ltd.
Questions:
- If Robert Pena Jr. can't pay back his business partner, what makes us believe that he will be honest with our tax dollars?
- If Robert Pena Jr. lies to his business partner, with the financial records, then how will be accountable with our tax dollars?
- If Robert Pena Jr. can't pay back his business partner, how is he expected to pay his truck?
- If Robert Pena Jr. is already involved in this shady business dealing, as well as the EEDC money scam, then maybe these next cases are his too.

Plus, a lot of the information is blacked out. Robert ... what do you have to hide? Lot numbers? Amounts? Cases? Violations? Admissions of guilt?

Both of you are very good writers, and your editorials are hard-hitting and persuasive. Not always true, but true enough of the time to merit serious attention from readers.
Besides, opinons (editorials) are designed to be slanted anyhow, and quite frankly, most of journalism now-a-days is opinion disguised as news, and news disguised as opinion is propaganda, so what's the difference between you and the "Old Media."

Now, regarding some of your previous thoughts about why doesn't Edinburg News or Edinburg Politics open up their websites to comments, like you do, let me ask you this: what's the difference between blocking all comments and editing comments, like our good friend, Aaron Peña does?
I know for a fact he screens out comments in order to avoid problems with libel or other political pitfalls. So, all we have left are comments usually agreeing with his philosophy, or comments telling him he is doing a good job. He's no dummy. He is not about to let his web site get hijacked by people who have nothing better to do than hurl personal attacks, usually unsubstantiated, under the cowardly guise of anonymity.
You and I disagree on how "free" freedom of speech should be on the issue of personal attacks against private citizens, but I know that in the end, it is better for our country to have websites where everything goes. But remember, freedom of speech comes with a price when it winds up hurting people, especially when they are innocent.
Anyhow, I look forward to your thoughts on Aaron's website and his decision to edit (censor?) comments.

My, my, why in the world do people think that because of Edinburg News or Earn my Vote that the city has been reduced to political rubble?
To the city's credit, these two web sites (albeit anonymously posted) have done much more good for democracy in Edinburg than any other publications in the past. These are two distinct and competing publications that keep their respective political allies under the public microscope.
Yes, some of their postings (all right, ALL of their postings) are pretty inflamatory, but hey, how about the scores of scorching political ads that grace our printed newspapers or commercial broadcast airwaves. Now, if those ads aren't enough to make someone want to move away from here, then Edinburg News and Earn My Vote certainly never will.
Edinburg is a much better place because of Edinburg News and Earn My Vote because, in their view, they speak truth to power on both sides. No one is being scared away from voting or running for office or opening up a business or building a home in Edinburg because of this or any other website/blog.
I have no doubt that in the coming months, you will be seeing more political blogs popping up in Edinburg because the state legislative races are soon going to be in gear, and there are just too many people in Edinburg what have what it takes to get a third, fourth, and fifth political blog up and running.
As for Aaron Peña, I wasn't criticizing him for editing letters from readers. I think that is a very smart move on his part. There are too many crazies (maybe he thinks I'm one of them!) out there for him to worry about letting his blog get hijacked by petty and vengeful readers. Edinburg used to have a very vibrant press until Pearl Mathis destroyed the Edinburg Daily Review. Now that once great daily has been reduced to a twice daily supermarket shopper.
There were the great days when Jim Mathis and his protege Gilbert Tagle would get the scoop on everything that occurred in City Hall, the ECISD central office and the Courthouse. Officials would joke that it felt like "Jungle Jim" had spies everywhere. Call it the Daily Mistake, the Deadly Review or the Deadly Rearview, Edinburg's democracy was protected. Compare us to the Othalatarian dictatorship next door.
Now, the Review is too afraid to lose ads. It's into happy news. The Monitor doesn't care. If the whole City Council committed suicide en masse, it would take three weeks before it would be reported in The Monitor.
The blogs are the only thing keeping Edinburg from becoming the joke that McAllen is and the cauldillo-ocracies that Pharr and Mission are.

I know them both personally and know what their view is on the whole Ochoa/Palacios division, but that doesn't mean that they didn't ask for support from both sides. I actually think that as a city, we could accomplish a whole lot more, have better schools that aren't over crowded and would have a stronger voice on the state level if people would just learn to put aside their own personal grab for power. Now before you open your mouth, I think both sides are guilty. No one side is guiltier than the other. Again, it's smart to not assume anything and reach out to everyone when running for office no matter which side they may be on, but don't assume yourself that they didn't go to THEM for support. Trust me, I know the truth when it comes to that subject. Long story short is there are a few bad apples that currently hold public office masquerading as public servants who only have the taxpayers best interests at heart, but do nothing more than promote their friends and families to positions in our city and schools that they don't belong in. Until we weed those people out and work toward a common goal I see the city cutting off it's own nose to spite it's own face.

Wrong again, but to clarify my point, when I talked about bad apples in political seats, I was talking about two school board members who only seem to get involved when either athletics are involved or their family and friends are up for positions. Also, on the city level, I had my reservations about the new mayor, but for the most part, I don't see him doing that much good or bad. He is just doing his job. However, I don't like his buddies and the way that they still seem to be siphoning taxpayer money from the system.

I was at the McAllen Country Club for lunch (business meeting) yesterday, May 10. When I drove up I saw a white Cadillac type car parked in the Handicap parking with a huge Robert Pena magnet on it. I thought WOW I didn't know Robert's mom would be at the Country Club. In the main dining room I enjoyed lunch and sure enough at approx. 1:15 I saw Robert Pena exiting the main ballroom. I guess his Dad's car isn't fixed yet.

I can understand, and I realize, that big news operations like the Monitor do indeed shake down politicians in exchange for positive stories (it's called 'advertising' and 'give my wife a job and we'll run all your stories', but it is a bit of a stretch to think one person could have that kind of power.
Otherwise, anyone with a blog or the ability to write a nasty letter to the editor would be making tons of money.

The thing is that a lot of the people who moved have no idea how to perform in that position. Is that right? They have no experience there. I am not saying that we should move them back to their positions...But come on..these people that were moved don't have experience in those fields...
actually, that isn't right at all. The people who were moved either have expericene in those postions from either other districts or as side jobs as contractors (hint hint.) At any rate, people weren't just moved just for the heck of it. They were moved from jobs that allowed them to kick back and do nothing to jobs that acutally required that they do something.

I did a have a very interesting day at lunch. Closed on a huge deal over lunch in fact. I couldn't help but see the car as it was parked on the closest to the drive around. Big white car with cheesy orange and green magnets. Hard to miss. There was also no missing him coming out of the ballroom. If you know him ask him if he didn't come out near the buffet. I guarantee he was there and he parked in the handicap parking. But of course pictures are worth a thousand words. But if you need more proof that he was there, Olaf Frandsen of The Monitor was having lunch a few tables away from me.
